The director-general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike has affirmed the agency’s commitment to deepening relationships with Nigerian universities and academic institutions.
Anosike expressed this commitment during a visit to his office by the vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Sciences, Effurun, Warri, Delta State, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh.
Anosike emphasised the timely nature of the visit, highlighting the potential for collaboration with FUPRE in various areas, particularly within the marine sector and the blue economy. He identified research as a crucial domain where both organisations could leverage their respective strengths and competencies. Anosike disclosed plans to develop a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and sought input from FUPRE leadership to further solidify the collaboration.
In response, Rim-Rukeh congratulated Anosike on his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence that his wealth of experience would significantly enhance the agency’s services to stakeholders. Acknowledging NiMet’s critical role in the survival of Nigeria’s aviation sector and other industries, Rim-Rukeh proposed exploring the possibility of establishing a weather monitoring station at FUPRE in collaboration with NiMet.
The vice-chancellor also expressed interest in partnership areas such as training and capacity building, facilitating industrial attachments for FUPRE students at NiMet, jointly publishing journals on atmospheric variables, and exploring opportunities for endowing a professional chair at FUPRE.
The proposed collaboration between NiMet and FUPRE signifies a strategic alliance aimed at advancing research, knowledge sharing and practical applications in the field of meteorology and atmospheric sciences.
