The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) recently held a special send-off ceremony at its headquarters in Abuja to honour retiring staff members for their decades of selfless service, professionalism and commitment to the agency’s growth and national development.
The event brought together staff, management and retirees in a warm display of appreciation for their invaluable contributions. Marking a historic first, this was the agency’s inaugural formal send-forth ceremony, a gesture that reflects a growing culture of institutional recognition and respect for legacy.
Addressing attendees, the director-general of NiMet, Prof Charles Anosike lauded the retirees for their commitment and hard work, describing them as foundational figures whose efforts have played a key role in shaping the agency into its present form.
“Today, we celebrate legacy. We honour men and women who have not only given their best to NiMet but have also mentored others, built systems, and contributed to the institutional memory we are privileged to inherit,” said Anosike.
He emphasised that retirement should be seen not as an end, but as a new beginning. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to staff development, welfare, and succession planning, noting that the work of the retirees had laid a strong foundation for future progress.
“Retirement is the beginning of a new journey—one filled with reflection, fulfilment and hope. We are working to strengthen staff capacity through ongoing training, mentoring and reform,” he added.
Anosike also commended the director of human resources and the management and planning team for successfully coordinating the event, stating that such efforts demonstrate NiMet’s renewed dedication to honouring service and celebrating excellence.
The retirees, visibly touched by the ceremony, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the agency for the recognition. Many pledged continued support to NiMet in various advisory or mentorship roles, even in retirement.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of awards and souvenirs to the retirees, as well as emotional tributes and reflections from colleagues and friends, marking the occasion as both celebratory and deeply meaningful.
