The director-general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike has officially closed a week-long Maproom training workshop at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, marking a key step toward the launch of the Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) initiative.
The workshop brought together participants from the agriculture, academia and health sectors to strengthen technical capacity on the use of NiMet’s Maproom platform – an interactive tool designed to improve access to climate data in support of early warning systems, public health planning, disaster risk management and climate-resilient agriculture.
The Maproom platform facilitates seamless access to meteorological information, helping users interpret climate data for informed decisions. Its use is crucial for advancing climate-smart practices and enhancing collaboration between scientific institutions and policy actors.
In his remarks, Anosike praised participants for their commitment and described the training as a “vital step” in integrating climate information into national and sectoral planning. “This workshop has created a network of empowered individuals equipped to use climate information for smart, timely decisions,” he said. “Our goal is to ensure that early warning leads to early action.”
He reaffirmed NiMet’s mandate to deliver accurate, timely and actionable climate services in support of national development goals. Anosike also recognised the project’s implementing partners – Sahel Consulting, the International Research Institute (IRI) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – for their role in advancing the ENACTS initiative.
The training sets the stage for the ENACTS launch, scheduled for August 19–20, 2025, in Abuja. The two-day event will include a high-level opening and technical sessions to showcase project milestones and outline next steps.
ENACTS is expected to significantly improve user-driven climate services, enhance resilience and support sustainable development across Nigeria’s key socio-economic sectors.
