The new leadership at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), under the guidance of director-general, Prof. Charles Anosike, is spearheading initiatives to prioritise the commercialisation of meteorological data and enhance staff capacity. This strategic direction aligns with the vision set by the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, for advancements in the aviation sector.
Keyamo emphasised the importance of prioritising staff welfare, training, safety improvements and increased internally generated revenue within aviation agencies. Responding to this directive, NiMet’s management organised a training and interactive session with officials from Tomorrow.io, a weather intelligence company based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
The session, conducted at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, followed the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between NiMet and Tomorrow.io. The collaboration aims to explore various areas, including the commercialisation of weather data, enhancement of weather and climate forecast accuracy and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in weather and climate intelligence. This initiative demonstrates NiMet’s commitment to driving innovation and leveraging partnerships for the benefit of the aviation sector.
