The National Assembly has enhanced the regulatory function of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) by repealing and enacting the NIMC Act No. 23.

This legislative effort aims to improve the efficacy and inclusivity of Nigeria’s Identity Management System.

The NIMC Bill proposes several amendments to strengthen the foundational framework of the NIMC and its operations. One key amendment expands the scope of registrable persons, creating a more comprehensive and inclusive identification system. This will enhance national security, facilitate efficient service delivery, and promote financial inclusion.

Additionally, the bill aims to streamline the sharing of personal data by incorporating robust data protection measures. These measures will safeguard individuals’ privacy and confidentiality, fostering trust among citizens in the handling of their information. The bill also enhances NIMC’s administrative enforcement power, ensuring timely and accurate compliance with ID registration requirements.

According to head of corporate communication at NIMC, Kayode Adegoke the repeal and enactment bill will lead to a more streamlined registration process, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and enhancing the reliability of the Nigeria ID system once passed into law.
