The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has warned residents living along the River Benue Basin to vacate the riverbanks due to rising water levels.

The increased water flow, caused by persistent heavy rainfall, has reached flooding levels, putting nearby communities at risk.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 17, 2024, NIHSA’s director-general, Umar Mohammed called for urgent action from citizens residing in these flood-prone areas. He emphasised the importance of relocating to safer ground to prevent potential loss of life and property.

Mohammed also urged residents along the River Niger to take similar precautions, noting that the management of Kainji and Jebba Dams is working to manage the situation. NIHSA encouraged cooperation with emergency management agencies to mitigate the impact of flooding and enhance resilience in vulnerable communities.
