The national commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji has disclosed that the commission is set to inaugurate the pre-inaugural National Privacy and Digital Awareness Campaign on March 21, 2024, in Lagos.
This campaign, he said, led by the Nigerian Stakeholders for Data Protection Awareness (NSDPA), aims to educate citizens, businesses and organisations on the critical importance of safeguarding personal data in the digital age, in accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) of 2023.
The campaign’s core objective is to raise awareness about data protection and privacy, not only to create a secure digital environment but also to stimulate job opportunities across Nigeria. By engaging thousands of Nigerians to contribute their insights and creativity, the NSDPA seeks to enrich the National Awareness Campaign’s value proposition while addressing key data protection issues.
Comprising experts from diverse sectors, the NSDPA is committed to promoting strategic awareness of data protection and privacy throughout Nigeria. Recognising the pivotal role of such awareness in fostering a robust digital economy, the campaign aims to reach citizens across all six geo-political zones of Nigeria:
North West: Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Dutse, Birni Kebbi and Gusau
North East: Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Jalingo, Bauchi and Damaturu
North Central: Jos, Makurdi, Lafia, Ilorin, Minna
South West: Lagos, Ibadan, Ogun, Akure, Ado-Ekiti and Oshogbo
South East: Enugu, Owerri, Abakaliki, Awka and Umuahia
South South: Port Harcourt, Calabar, Uyo, Yenagoa, Benin and Asaba
The National Privacy and Digital Awareness Campaign, leveraging extensive media resources, is a collaborative initiative between the NSDPA and the NDPC. Its overarching goal is to assist the NDPC in fostering a national culture of data protection awareness, aligning with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
Through this campaign, Nigeria endeavours to create a safer and more secure digital environment while empowering its citizens with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their personal data. This initiative reflects the nation’s commitment to upholding data privacy standards and promoting digital literacy in the modern age.
