Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN has emphasised Nigeria’s strategic location, equidistant to most countries, which makes it a potential major hub in Africa.

He made this assertion during a courtesy call from the Canadian High Commissioner in Nigeria at his office. Keyamo highlighted the significant number of Nigerians residing in Canada, stressing the necessity for a direct flight route between the two nations. He pointed out that most flights to Canada are currently transit, underscoring the need for infrastructure development in Nigeria’s aviation sector to support this population.

Keyamo acknowledged Nigeria’s long-standing relationship with Canada, suggesting the exploration of cargo development opportunities, given the rise of Nigerian eateries in Canada. He mentioned that a focal person from the ministry would be appointed to formalise arrangements for a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Canada and Nigeria. This MoU would address direct routes, repository, cargo flights and a proposed side meeting in Canada for business investments.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Jamie Christoff noted Nigeria’s growing student population in Canada, which numbers about 18,000. He expressed interest in establishing a direct flight route to support this demographic. Christoff highlighted Canada’s substantial aviation sector, valued at approximately $20 billion and his willingness to introduce private sector investors to Nigeria.

This collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Canada.
