Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, has received the Jamaican Ambassador to Nigeria, Lincoln Downer, along with the Consular, Andre Hibbert, at his office in Abuja. The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations, particularly in aviation, trade and cultural exchanges.

Ambassador Downer expressed deep appreciation for Nigeria and shared a personal discovery that made the visit even more meaningful. “I have since discovered that Nigeria might be my ancestral home after all,” he said, setting the tone for a productive discussion. He emphasised the need to enhance diplomatic ties, particularly by reviewing the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Jamaica and Nigeria.

Highlighting air travel as a crucial aspect of cooperation, Downer explained that Jamaica currently lacks a national carrier and relies on neighboring Trinidad and Tobago for air transport. He proposed merging the BASA between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago to bridge the gap and meet the growing demand for travel between Nigeria and Jamaica. The ambassador stressed that increased air connectivity would facilitate stronger business and cultural exchanges, benefiting both countries.

Beyond aviation, Downer noted Jamaica’s increasing interest in Nigerian culture, particularly Afrobeat music and Nollywood films, which have gained popularity among Jamaicans. He also pointed to the growing demand for Jamaican spices in Nigeria, underscoring the economic potential of stronger bilateral trade. “There is no reason why we should not have a direct flight between our countries. Nigerians love Jamaica and our cultural ties continue to grow,” he added.

In response, Keyamo welcomed the ambassador’s proposals and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing air transport agreements with Jamaica. “I am delighted to initiate the BASA process. To ensure swift progress, we will set up a committee to expedite the necessary arrangements,” he said. He further expressed his willingness to travel to Jamaica if needed to finalise and sign the agreement in person.

This meeting marks a pivotal step in strengthening Nigeria-Jamaica relations, paving the way for increased collaboration in aviation, trade and cultural exchanges. The discussions signal a shared commitment to deepening ties and addressing the logistical challenges that have long hindered direct connectivity between the two nations.
