The Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC) has partnered with Abbott Rapid Diagnostics (Pty) Ltd to localise the production of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) in Nigeria.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Wednesday in Abuja by PVAC’s national coordinator, Dr. Abdu Mukhtar and Abbott’s vice-president for Europe, Middle East and Asia, Dr. Rabah El Menshawy. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of high-quality healthcare delivery.
The partnership supports Nigeria’s aim to eradicate HIV by 2030 through the development and local manufacturing of RDTs. Dr. Mukhtar emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating that localising RDT production will reduce dependency on imports, create jobs and make healthcare more affordable for Nigerians.
“This agreement is a milestone in our journey toward self-reliance in healthcare,” Mukhtar said. He added that the collaboration highlights the role of public-private partnerships in PVAC’s mission to provide affordable and high-quality healthcare products nationwide.
By strengthening local industries and enhancing diagnostic capabilities, this initiative is expected to transform Nigeria’s healthcare system and serve as a model for other African nations. It also aligns with the country’s broader goal of achieving universal health coverage and addressing critical health challenges through innovation and collaboration.
El Menshawy reaffirmed Abbott’s commitment to advancing healthcare systems worldwide. “This partnership aligns with Abbott’s vision of improving access to life-saving diagnostics and fostering sustainable healthcare solutions in Africa,” he noted.
The signing ceremony, held at the Federal Ministry of Health, had in attendance senior management from JNC International Limited, a key partner in driving this initiative forward.
