The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT Ltd) has been hailed for its central role in advancing national connectivity, bridging digital gaps and securing Nigeria’s place in the global knowledge economy.

The commendation came from the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Rafiu Adeladan, during a courtesy visit to the managing director and chief executive officer of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, Jane Egerton-Idehen at the Ground Control Station in Abuja.

Adeladan described NIGCOMSAT as more than an implementing agency, calling it “a strategic partner in realising Nigeria’s aspirations in space technology, broadband access, and digital sovereignty.”

He acknowledged longstanding challenges facing the agency, including a 10-year recruitment freeze that has constrained innovation and operational performance. Also noted were the shortage of skilled technical personnel, the need for support to implement Project 774 and inadequate remuneration – factors he said were critical to attracting and retaining top talent.

While some of these concerns would require broader policy reviews and cross-agency coordination, Adeladan pledged the ministry’s support in exploring practical solutions within Nigeria’s fiscal and regulatory framework.

In her remarks, Egerton-Idehen welcomed the permanent secretary’s visit and emphasised NIGCOMSAT’s strategic potential. “If other nations can reach space, there is no reason Nigeria cannot,” she said. “NIGCOMSAT stands ready to lead that charge.” She called on the Ministry to prioritise Project 774 and help resolve systemic issues slowing the agency’s growth and efficiency.

A statement from NIGCOMSAT’s head of corporate affairs, Aisha Bantam noted that the visit is part of the Permanent Secretary’s ongoing engagements aimed at strengthening institutions that drive Nigeria’s digital and technological development.

The visit marks a renewed drive toward bolstering Nigeria’s space technology capabilities through strategic collaboration.
