There was a symbolic change of leadership at the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development on Friday as the outgoing permanent secretary, Dr. Mary Ogbe officially handed over to her successor, Engr. Faruk Yusuf Yabo in a brief but heartfelt ceremony attended by top management and staff of the ministry.
The event marked a warm welcome for the new Permanent Secretary and an emotional farewell to Ogbe, who has been redeployed to another ministry. Staff members expressed appreciation for her leadership and wished her success in her new assignment.
In his inaugural remarks, Yabo solicited the cooperation and full support of the ministry’s staff and management, pledging to continue the legacy of excellence established by his predecessor.
“Ogbe has set a strong foundation, and I intend to build on it,” he said. “I ask you to support me with the same commitment and dedication you gave her. The solid minerals sector is key to Nigeria’s economic transformation, and I count on you all to make our goals a reality.”
He emphasized the critical role of the sector in diversifying Nigeria’s economy and improving national revenue, calling on staff to renew their dedication to service and innovation.
Earlier in her farewell message, Ogbe thanked the staff for the support and cooperation she enjoyed during her tenure, describing the team as deeply committed and professional.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with an exceptional group of people,” she said. “As I move to my next assignment, I ask that you extend the same support to Engr. Yabo as you did to me. That is the spirit of public service.”
She also encouraged staff to continue improving the ministry’s work, reminding them that every effort contributes to national development. In a moment of humility, she asked for forgiveness from anyone she may have offended, stressing that any misunderstanding was never personal but borne out of commitment to duty.
The occasion turned emotional as various directors praised Ogbe’s leadership style and dedication. Director of human resources, Ijioma Idika described her as a maternal figure in the ministry. “It’s a mixed feeling for us. She carried us like her children and supported anyone who had a clear goal,” she said.
Director of general services, Toyin Showemimo echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging Ogbe’s unwavering support and expressing hope that Engr. Yabo would continue that tradition. “We welcome you warmly, sir,” she added.
Also speaking, the director-general of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO), Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom lauded Ogbe’s contributions and affirmed that her redeployment marked the beginning of even greater service.
He assured Yabo of the agency’s full support and commitment to collaborative success.
In a statement released by the ministry’s deputy director of press and public relations, Kania Andeyaba the handover was described as a seamless transition in line with the public service ethos of continuity, dedication, and national development.
