NESREA MARABA SEAL

Due to excessive noise pollution, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) sealed off Cyvillian Garden, a well-known relaxation spot on Abacha Road in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

In a briefing for the press, the director-general of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor represented by the director of inspection and enforcement, Dr. Christopher Beka explained that the closure was prompted by numerous complaints from residents and the facility’s failure to reduce noise levels after receiving multiple notifications.

Barikor stated, “We took all necessary measures before deciding to seal the facility. The complaints from residents were thoroughly investigated, and noise readings taken at different times were found to be excessively high for a residential area. Abatement notices were subsequently issued, as required by law. We also conducted an arbitration meeting where the facility was advised to operate within the standards outlined in the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2009.”

“Noise pollution is a serious concern that we are addressing directly, as it affects the health of citizens. It is unacceptable for someone to return home after a long day’s work and be unable to sleep at night due to noise. One cannot run a business or seek enjoyment at the expense of others,” he added.

Barikor reaffirmed NESREA’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerians enjoy a high quality of life through effective environmental regulation and enforcement, promising that more enforcement actions would be carried out across all states in the federation.
