Following the Federal Government’s ban on single-use plastics in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) nationwide, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) continued its sensitisation for staff on this policy.
The workshop, organised with European Union support, included all agency staff, including janitorial and security personnel. Addressing the participants, NESREA’s director-general, Dr. Innocent Barikor emphasised that the ban is part of the government’s commitment to combating plastic pollution and promoting public health, environmental sustainability and ecosystem protection.
“This ban is essential to mitigate public health, sanitation and environmental risks caused by the rising use of single-use plastics (SUPs) like PET bottles, styrofoam packaging, plastic bags, sachets and straws,” Barikor stated. He noted that the campaign must start within NESREA as the agency champions sustainable consumption practices.
EU Facilitator, Mrs. Ibukun Faluyi outlined the ban’s implementation strategy, recommending steps such as installing water dispensers, providing staff with water bottles and branded shopping bags to ensure effective compliance across federal MDAs.
