The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has intensified its enforcement efforts by shutting down 25 additional facilities across four states in its ongoing campaign against environmental non-compliance.

The affected facilities, spread across Anambra, Enugu, Bayelsa and Rivers States, were sealed for various environmental infractions. These include failure to conduct environmental impact assessments (EIA) before commencing operations, neglecting to carry out environmental audits and operating without functional effluent treatment plants.

NESREA’s director-general, Prof. Innocent Barikor urged facility operators to strictly adhere to existing environmental regulations. He emphasised that the agency remains committed to carrying out regular enforcement activities to safeguard the environment and deter future violations.

“Environmental compliance is not optional. We will continue to hold violators accountable to protect public health and natural ecosystems,” Barikor stated.

NESREA highlighted that these enforcement actions are aimed at compelling companies to comply with Nigeria’s environmental laws, which are designed to ensure sustainability and prevent long-term ecological damage.

The agency has reiterated its readiness to engage with stakeholders through awareness, monitoring, and enforcement. It also urged companies to prioritise their environmental obligations in line with global best practices.

The latest shutdowns come amid increased public concern over industrial pollution, improper waste disposal, and the environmental impact of unregulated development. NESREA’s actions send a strong message that non-compliance will not be tolerated.

As Nigeria intensifies its commitment to environmental protection, agencies like NESREA play a critical role in ensuring that economic development does not come at the cost of environmental degradation.
