In a bid to accelerate Nigeria’s industrialisation, the National Economic Council (NEC) has called on state governments to adopt and utilise the technological innovations developed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).
Vice President Kashim Shettima made this appeal during the 146th NEC meeting, held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting followed a presentation by NASENI’s executive vice chairman, Mr. Khalil Halilu detailing the agency’s strategic roadmap for Nigeria’s industrial transformation.
In his presentation titled “NASENI Economic Transformation Through Advancement in Technology Transfer and Adaptation,” Halilu outlined the agency’s focus on critical sectors, including:
– Renewable energy and sustainability.
– Health and biotechnology.
– Agriculture and food manufacturing.
– Sustainable transportation and mobility.
– Digital technology.
– Construction and smart cities.
– Defense and aerospace.
Halilu highlighted NASENI’s innovative contributions to energy security, including electric vehicles, NASENI solar home systems for rural electrification and solar irrigation pumps. The agency has also developed coal-based fertilisers to boost agricultural productivity and smart devices tailored to Nigeria’s market.
“Our mission is clear: to make NASENI the go-to institution for technology transfer in Nigeria,” Halilu stated. He further emphasised the agency’s efforts in transforming Nigeria into a global innovation powerhouse through initiatives such as:
– NASENI Troment (vaccine factory).
– NASENI Portland (CNG centre).
– NASENI Devfrontier (solar light and battery).
– NASENI Renewable Park.
– NASENI Family Homes (sustainable housing solutions).
The agency has also attracted $3.23 billion in investments and launched the DELT-Her Initiative to empower female engineers, among other impactful projects.
Following the presentation, NEC lauded NASENI’s efforts and directed the agency to scale up the establishment of lithium battery factories in resource-rich regions and repair tractors nationwide under the National Asset Restoration Programme.
A statement by NASENI’s director of information, Olusegun Ayeoyenikan confirmed that the council resolved to harness NASENI’s tailored support for manufacturing and public sector partnerships. This will ensure Nigeria benefits from infrastructure, policy frameworks and market access critical for economic diversification.
NASENI remains committed to collaborating with state governments and the private sector to unlock Nigeria’s potential for industrial innovation and sustainable development.
