The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has called on Nigerians to prioritise their health and safety during the festive season to prevent disease outbreaks often linked to heightened gatherings and increased travel.

The agency emphasised the importance of preventive measures such as proper hygiene, staying home when unwell and ensuring food safety to protect individuals and communities during the celebrations.

The director-general of the NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris stated this during an interview with journalists over the weekend in Abuja.

Idris underscored the need for regular handwashing, staying home when sick and maintaining proper hygiene practices to safeguard public health.

“As we celebrate this festive season, let us prioritise our health and safety. Remember to wash your hands regularly, stay home if you’re feeling unwell, and spread joy, not germs,” he said.

He highlighted the risks of disease transmission during festive celebrations, referencing past trends where communicable diseases like respiratory infections, foodborne illnesses and cholera often spiked.

“For instance, during the 2022 holiday season, flu cases increased by 20 per cent nationwide and food-borne illnesses were reported in several states due to unsafe handling of meals,” he noted.

Idris specifically warned against poor food hygiene during the festivities.

“Festive gatherings often involve shared meals, so it is critical to ensure proper preparation and storage of food to prevent outbreaks of food-borne illnesses,” he added.

To protect themselves and their loved ones, he advised the following:

– Ensure ventilation in crowded spaces: Proper airflow can reduce the spread of airborne diseases.

– Practice safe food hygiene: Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, cook food properly, and avoid storing cooked meals at unsafe temperatures.

– Get vaccinated: For diseases like influenza, ensure vaccination, especially for children, the elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions.

He assured Nigerians that the NCDC is working closely with state governments and other stakeholders to monitor disease trends and respond promptly to any outbreaks.

“Emergency response hotlines remain active nationwide, and disease surveillance teams are on alert. Together, we can ensure this season is not only joyous but also safe for everyone,” he said.

He encouraged citizens to visit the NCDC website ([www.ncdc.gov.ng](http://www.ncdc.gov.ng)) for detailed health guidelines during the holidays.

“The public is also urged to call the NCDC toll-free line (6232) for assistance or to report cases to the State Ministry of Health. The gift of good health is the best present we can share this season. Let’s work together to protect the health of all Nigerians,” the DG concluded.
