The newly appointed executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, whose appointment was confirmed by President Bola Tinubu on October 11, 2023, has resumed office.
Maida’s impressive academic background includes an MEng in information systems engineering from Imperial College, London, in 2002 and a PhD in electrical and electronic Engineering from the University of Bath, United Kingdom, which he attained in 2006. In addition, between 2018 and 2019, Maida completed a post-graduate diploma in entrepreneurship (FinTech Pathway) programme at the Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Before his appointment, Maida served as the executive director of technology and operations at Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), the nation’s central switch company, owned by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and all licensed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria. At NIBSS, he was pivotal to the standardisation of the technical and operational aspects of financial devices across Nigeria, ensuring they accept all cards issued by banks and licensed card schemes.
Previously, Maida held the position of Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Nigerian-based fintech firm Arca Payments Network and served as a senior manager at Cisco Systems in the United Kingdom.
The director of public affairs at the NCC, Reuben Muoka described Maida as a seasoned technical professional with over 15 years of multifunctional international experience in fintech, telecoms and enterprise technology. He also worked as a network design consultant at EE, a part of BT Group and was part of BT Group, one of the UK’s largest mobile communications companies, from 2010 to 2014. Additionally, from 2006 to 2010, he worked as a system engineer at Ubiquisys, a prominent company specialising in intelligent 3G and LTE small cells, which later became part of Cisco.
With a diverse range of experiences, Maida possesses a strong technical background and in-depth commercial knowledge. He is a professional of high standing and is happily married with children.
The statement from Muoka said the NCC extends a warm welcome to him as he assumes the role of executive vice-chairman and chief executive officer.
