In accordance with its authority under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 to issue and renew licenses, foster equitable competition and advance the communications industry, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has temporarily halted issuance of 3 categories of new licenses.
Notifying all concerned parties, the commission said the affected categories include Interconnect Exchange, Mobile Virtual Network Operator and Value Added Service Aggregator licenses.
The commission said the temporary suspension remained essential, to allow it conduct a comprehensive review of various critical aspects within these categories, including the existing level of competition, market saturation and prevailing market dynamics.
“It is important for the public to be aware that starting from May 17, 2024, no new applications for the aforementioned licenses will be entertained during the suspension period. This decision does not affect pending applications before the commission, which will be evaluated based on their individual merits,” a statement from the commission’s director of public affairs, Reuben Muoka said.
