The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has addressed misleading statements circulating on social media regarding MAFAB Communications’ rollout of Fifth Generation (5G) services. The NCC clarified that MAFAB Communications successfully secured a 5G licence during the transparent 5G auction held on December 13, 2021.
Following the completion of the necessary payment of $273.6 million in February 2022, MAFAB officially received its 5G licence on February 22, 2022.
In adherence to the stipulated rollout conditions, MAFAB publicly introduced its 5G services in Abuja on January 24, 2023 and in Lagos on January 26, 2023. These services were initially launched in six cities: Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano and Kaduna.
The commission has been actively overseeing MAFAB’s rollout progress and has been regularly updated on the deployment of infrastructure to provide the promised services in line with its operating licence.
The director of public affairs at the commission, Reuben Muoka emphasised that stakeholders and the public should disregard the false and misleading information regarding MAFAB’s 5G rollout.
