“The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) refers to the incident involving the Max Air aircraft, registration number 5N-MBD, which occurred at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano on January 28, 2025, at approximately 10:51 PM.
Statutorily, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into the incident. The NCAA will provide the necessary support to the NSIB in this matter. It is important to note that the specific cause(s) of the incident will be established only after the NSIB completes its investigation.
Additionally, the NCAA has begun conducting organisational risk profiles for each scheduled operator, including Max Air, which is nearing completion.
Due to this incident, Max Air is suspending its domestic flight operations for three months, effective from midnight on January 31, 2025, to allow its management to conduct an internal appraisal of its operations.
During this three-month period, the NCAA will carry out a thorough safety and economic audit of Max Air. The safety audit will include a re-inspection of Max Air’s organisation, procedures, personnel and aircraft, as specified by Part 1.3.3.3(b) of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations. The economic audit will critically assess the airline’s financial health to ensure its capability to sustain safe flight operations.
The resumption of Max Air’s domestic flight operations will depend on the satisfactory completion of these audits.
