The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has strengthened the nation’s aviation security by training its aviation security staff and representatives from all relevant security agencies operating at airports.
The two-week training, held at the NCAA corporate headquarters in Abuja, focused on Man-Portable Air-Defence Systems (MANPADS). These lightweight anti-aircraft weapons pose a growing threat to aviation safety worldwide.
The course, titled “Reducing Vulnerabilities to MANPADS and Stand-off Weapons,” was facilitated by the Civil Aviation Authority of France.
Speaking at the recent closing ceremony, acting director-general of the NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo noted that participants had gained critical skills to address the MANPADS threat, which endangers both military and civilian aviation.
By implementing preventive measures, Najomo stated, Nigeria can avert catastrophic impacts on both the national and global economy.
He explained that assembling participants from various organisations was a deliberate strategy to promote interagency collaboration and cooperation to achieve shared security goals.
“We must work together if we are to ensure a secure aviation sector,” he emphasised.
NCAA’s director of aviation security, Dr. Omogo Chinedu lauded Najomo for identifying and addressing gaps in aviation security. He highlighted the acting DG’s commitment to developing the necessary competencies among staff to enhance aviation safety and security in Nigeria.
