The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has assured the public that Nigeria’s airspace is safer than ever, thanks to its enhanced safety surveillance measures.

The acting director-general of civil aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo gave this assurance during the annual New Year prayer session held at the authority’s corporate headquarters in Abuja. The prayer session, traditionally held every January 2, also marked the commencement of activities celebrating NCAA’s 25th anniversary.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Capt. Najomo emphasised that the authority has bolstered its safety surveillance systems to address safety concerns and ensure safer airspace operations.

“And let me be honest with you, what Mr. President has done with his ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda has ensured that our minister, with his five-point agenda, has given us the opportunity to perform better. We will continue to improve. Our directors are on ground,” he stated.

Najomo further affirmed the NCAA’s commitment to enforcing compliance among airlines. “Anything that will ensure every airline complies, we will do. Recently, we had to sanction some airlines and they accepted their sanctions,” he said.

“We sanctioned five airlines for failing to refund tickets on time, and they have now agreed to comply. This year, 2025, we hope to see even better compliance,” he added.

Addressing recent media attacks against him, Najomo reiterated his focus on delivering results and meeting performance targets. “The attacks are not affecting my work. There are no distractions because I am resolute in doing what I’m supposed to do. My confirmation is in the hands of Mr. President and, when the time comes, he will do the needful. For now, I remain committed to my duties,” he said.

Regarding staff welfare, Najomo highlighted efforts to motivate employees and improve their working conditions. He also noted the Authority’s push toward full digitalisation, citing the deployment of several digital solutions such as the flight data centre, CPD portal and DATR portal to enhance operational efficiency and ensure seamless business processes.

The high point of the event was the hoisting of the NCAA @25 flag and the unveiling of an anniversary monument by Najomo, accompanied by his management team and a large contingent of NCAA staff.
