The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola has described the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy framework as a comprehensive and inclusive policy that aims to enhance maritime governance and position the sector as a vital driver of national prosperity, in alignment with Africa’s Agenda 2063.
During the second and final leg of the Executive Technical Validation Workshop for the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy held in Abuja, the minister noted that the series of validation workshops and consultations over the past few months are intended to redefine and establish a robust framework that will serve as a blueprint for advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector.
Oyetola emphasised the ministry’s vision for the sector and the importance of engaging a diverse group of professionals, including industry experts, academics and researchers.
“This reflects the Ministry’s dedication and commitment to the growth and development of the sector,” Oyetola stated.
Recognising the maritime domain as a crucial pillar of Nigeria’s future economy, the Minister highlighted the need to align the marine and blue economy with overall economic growth. He noted that an inclusive maritime policy could position Nigeria as a leader in the global blue economy.
“This engagement aims to reaffirm our priorities and establish a framework for advancing the maritime sector in the coming years. A key factor in driving maritime development is the creation of a strong policy framework,” Oyetola said.
The permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Oloruntola Olufemi added that the final executive validation workshop served to highlight the successes and achievements from previous engagements.
He pointed out that the marine industry is rapidly gaining economic relevance and transforming the fortunes of various nations worldwide.
“This workshop is an opportunity to consolidate those efforts and finalise a framework to guide the sustainable growth of the blue economy in Nigeria. In recent months, we have seen an increasing recognition of the marine sector in global discussions,” Oloruntola noted.
He urged stakeholders, saying, “As we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead, this policy embodies a forward-thinking approach to tapping into the vast potential of our blue economy.”
