The Minister of the Federal Ministry of Innovation Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji has hailed the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) as a pivotal force in the nation’s pursuit of technological progress.
Nnaji, who spoke during his inaugural visit and facility tour of the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, emphasised the strategic role NASRDA plays in leveraging space science and technology for national development.
Describing NASRDA as a beacon of excellence, Nnaji underscored the agency’s significant contributions to positioning Nigeria as a formidable player in global space exploration and research. He expressed confidence that NASRDA’s endeavours align with the administration’s commitment to fostering renewed hope for Nigerians, particularly in areas such as food security, security enhancement, wealth creation and employment opportunities.
Nnaji stressed the importance of space capabilities, stating that no nation can surpass its technological limits without investing in space exploration. He highlighted that a robust space programme not only contributes to national pride but also serves as a crucial indicator of Nigeria’s global economic standing.
The minister’s visit aimed to gather firsthand information critical to decision-making for the realisation of his set objectives. He commended NASRDA’s leadership for its successes and proactive efforts in seeking alternative funding through research product commercialization and public-private partnerships for essential infrastructure funding.
In his welcome address, the director-general of NASRDA, Dr. Halilu Shaba expressed gratitude for the minister’s visit, considering it a testament to the minister’s recognition of the pivotal role of science, innovation and technology in shaping the nation’s future. Shaba acknowledged the minister’s visionary leadership and assured that NASRDA would harness the wealth of expertise and passion he brings to advance Nigeria’s space programmes.
Shaba outlined the challenges faced by NASRDA and expressed optimism that, under the guidance of Minister Nnaji, the agency would achieve unprecedented milestones toward fulfilling its mandate. The NASRDA boss pledged the agency’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of space exploration and satellite technology for the nation’s betterment.
