In line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has successfully concluded a five-day training programme for 100 youths in Ebonyi State.
The initiative, focused on modern electrical installation techniques, aims to create employment opportunities, improve skills, and drive economic development in the region.
Held in Abakaliki, from November 26 to 30, 2024, the training equipped participants with crucial skills in electrical wiring, appliance repair, solar power installation, electrical panel maintenance, safety inspections, and system upgrades. This initiative is part of NASENI’s broader effort to equip Nigerian youths with the tools necessary to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving workforce.
At the closing ceremony, NASENI’s executive vice chairman, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu emphasised that the agency is dedicated to fostering economic growth through skill acquisition. Halilu, who was represented by the coordinating director of finance and accounts at NASENI, Mr. Ibrahim Baba Dauda highlighted the increasing demand for skilled electrical workers, particularly with the booming construction sector in Nigeria.
Halilu also acknowledged the role of the program in supporting President Tinubu’s 8-point agenda, which includes job creation, poverty alleviation and economic growth. According to Halilu, this initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Development goals, providing youths with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development. He noted, “As part of the government’s drive to tackle youth unemployment, this program not only provides a path to self-sufficiency for participants but also strengthens Nigeria’s workforce, ensuring safer, more efficient infrastructure and energy systems.”
The training was the third in a series of skill-building workshops organised by NASENI across Nigeria’s southeast region, following similar initiatives in Anambra and Imo states. These workshops, focused on solar installation and maintenance, reflect NASENI’s ongoing commitment to empowering youths with relevant, marketable skills. The skills taught in the Ebonyi program were tailored to meet industry needs, focusing on safety compliance, energy efficiency and global job opportunities.
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of startup kits to the trainees, which included electrical tools such as wire strippers, cordless drills, safety gear (including face shields, gloves, and goggles) and more. Halilu urged the beneficiaries to use the kits responsibly and to build sustainable careers. “Do not sell your kits,” he advised. “Your skills will give you a lasting identity and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.”
In his address, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, represented by the Commissioner for Skill Development and Job Creation, Hon. Elija Okwu Oko Udu praised the collaboration between NASENI and the state. He emphasised that the programme reflects Ebonyi’s commitment to providing youth with the tools they need to succeed. “This training is not just about individual growth; it’s about building a resilient, innovative workforce that will help propel Ebonyi State – and Nigeria – toward greater economic prosperity,” said Udu.
As part of its commitment to fostering long-term job creation and growth, NASENI aims to see the young participants flourish and build careers that not only address local needs but also contribute to the national economy. The agency has worked in partnership with various stakeholders, including private sector players, to ensure that the tools and skills provided in these workshops are aligned with global industry standards.
In a statement released by NASENI’s director of information, Mr. Olusegun Ayeoyenikan he stressed that these types of initiatives will continue to support the government’s effort in diversifying the economy and alleviating poverty. “Through collaboration with state governments and private sector players, NASENI will keep empowering youths across Nigeria with skills that meet global standards, driving the nation’s development and supporting its growing energy infrastructure needs.”
The Ebonyi training programme is one of many NASENI initiatives that aim to directly address Nigeria’s unemployment crisis by equipping youths with modern, sustainable skills. Moving forward, the agency will continue to focus on transforming the country’s workforce to help build a safer, more efficient and prosperous Nigeria.
