In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s defense capabilities and achieve self-reliance in military hardware production, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Defence.
The agreement, finalised on August 14, 2024, marks a pivotal step in Nigeria’s journey towards strengthening its defense infrastructure through indigenous innovation and technological advancement.
The signing ceremony, held in Abuja, was attended by key stakeholders, including the executive vice chairman of NASENI, Khalil Halilu, who emphasised the strategic importance of the Military Industrial Complex (MIC). He described the initiative as not just a strategic endeavor but a national imperative, crucial for Nigeria to address emerging threats with homegrown solutions in an increasingly volatile global security environment.
“Today, we are embarking on a journey that will redefine Nigeria’s defense landscape and secure our nation’s future,” Halilu stated. “This partnership between NASENI and the Ministry of Defence is a testament to our commitment to harness Nigeria’s scientific and engineering expertise in the service of national defense.”
NASENI’s proven track record in research, development, and manufacturing positions the agency as a key player in the establishment of the MIC. The new Military Industrial Complex will serve as a hub for the development, production and maintenance of military equipment, ranging from small arms to advanced defense systems. This initiative aims to create a robust ecosystem that meets the needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces while fostering the growth of local industries, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on foreign imports.
The MoU represents the beginning of a long-term collaboration designed to enhance Nigeria’s defense capabilities through innovation and indigenous production. Mr. Halilu highlighted that the ultimate goal is to ensure that the Nigerian military is equipped with the best tools to defend the nation. By laying the foundation for a self-reliant defense industry, the partnership also promises to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth.
Halilu expressed deep appreciation to the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, and the entire ministry for their unwavering support and confidence in NASENI. “We are ready to work tirelessly to ensure that the vision of a Nigerian Military Industrial Complex becomes a reality. We owe it to our nation, to our Armed Forces, and to the generations yet unborn,” he said.
This MoU signifies the start of a strategic partnership that is expected to elevate Nigeria’s defense capabilities and contribute to the broader goals of national security and economic development. The initiative reflects a strong commitment to building a defense industry that is not only self-sustaining but also capable of driving technological advancements within the country.
A statement by NASENI’s director of information, Olusegun Ayeoyenikan noted that other stakeholders present at the signing of this landmark agreement included the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu; the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Ibrahim Kana and senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Their presence underscores the broad support and collaborative effort needed to bring this ambitious project to fruition.
