The ministries of Solid Minerals and Steel Development celebrated the 2024 Customer Service Week with the theme, “Above and Beyond,” on Thursday, October 17, in Abuja.
Twenty-three (23) exceptional staff members were honoured for consistently delivering superior service and upholding the values of the ministries.
In his keynote address, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Steel Development, Dr. Chris Isokpunwu emphasised the significance of the theme, noting that civil service transcends personal recognition. He said: “To serve in the civil service is to commit to a purpose greater than ourselves. Our work is for the collective progress of society. Through dedication, we build trust between government and citizens.”
Isokpunwu praised the awardees as embodying the highest ideals of public service. He remarked: “Today, we celebrate those who have gone above and beyond, embodying the principles of integrity, dedication, and excellence. Their work is a testament to the spirit that drives the ministries.”
He portrayed the civil service as the backbone of national development, shaping policies and executing programs that touch millions of Nigerians. Stressing the importance of dedication, he urged ministry staff to embrace a spirit of selfless service, as their work strengthens the ministries’ missions and advances national progress.
He also highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Steel Development and other sectors in contributing to national growth and economic stability.
Encouraging staff to draw inspiration from the awardees, Isokpunwu reminded everyone that true success lies in the impact made on others. He urged staff to remain committed to public service and challenged them to strive for future recognition.
“To the awardees, let this be the beginning of a new challenge. Avoid the temptation of eye service—working hard only when watched. Continue to excel, even when unnoticed,” he said.
He extended his gratitude to the staff of the reform and service improvement department for their efforts in enhancing service delivery across the ministries.
Director of SERVICOM, Mr. Victor Ewache highlighted the significance of Customer Service Week, describing it as a period dedicated to celebrating outstanding service delivery. He urged the awardees to reflect on their recognition and strive for even greater heights.
“This award is a testament to your hard work, integrity, and commitment to service. Let it inspire you to reach greater heights,” he said.
Ewache also praised the permanent secretaries, the SERVICOM team and the directors for their roles in fostering a culture of excellence in service delivery.
Speaking at the event, national coordinator and CEO of SERVICOM, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli underscored the critical role of customer service in fostering citizen-focused service delivery.
She emphasised the importance of celebrating frontline staff, who play a vital role in the Ministry’s success. She said the ministry’s dedication to honouring staff during Customer Service Week reflects its commitment to improving service delivery.
Akajemeli explained the significance of this year’s theme, “Above and Beyond,” and the qualities necessary for excellent customer service, such as empathy, integrity and attentiveness.
The 2024 Customer Service Week celebration concluded with a speech by the spokesperson for the awardees, Mr. Ikechukwu Okoro who expressed their appreciation. He acknowledged the Ministry’s leadership for creating an environment that fosters excellence and pledged continued dedication to service.
