The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) and the Association of Computer Village Technology Merchants of Nigeria (ACOVITEMN) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote talent development in the ICT sector.

The move is in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of FMIST, Chief Uche Nnaji emphasised that science, technology and innovation (STI) play a critical role in the development of any nation, laying the groundwork for a prosperous and self-reliant Nigeria. He noted that today’s MoU signing marks a crucial step toward the shared goal of reducing imports and enhancing talent development in the ICT sector.

Nnaji highlighted that the MoU will focus on job creation and economic growth. By leveraging STI, the ministry aims to address poverty, create wealth, generate employment and redefine traditional values. The MoU seeks to ensure national prosperity and enhance global competitiveness by aligning local technological needs with international opportunities. It will also expand Nigeria’s capacity to produce value-added goods and services, modify existing products and processes for higher productivity, and develop tools to address climate change and improve disaster awareness, preparedness and education. The minister further stressed the importance of multidisciplinary research for sustainable development and the need for collaboration with the private sector.

He added that countries achieving remarkable strides in sustainable economic development owe their success to substantial investments in STI. “These investments not only drive continuous productivity growth but also pave the way for inclusive and sustainable industrial advancement.

“We are committed to seeing this MoU implemented successfully. As such, the permanent secretary will establish a committee comprising representatives from both parties to begin working on the implementation details,” he said.

In her address, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Esuabana Asanye, represented by the director of legal services, Tanko Ashana, assured ACOVITEMN members that the ministry will work with them to enhance technology. She encouraged the association to demonstrate commitment once the MoU is signed to expand the ICT sector in the country.

In response, the president of ACOVITEMN, Prince Anthony Nwakeze, assured the ministry of the body’s commitment to every aspect of the MoU, highlighting the long-term benefits it will bring to future generations. He noted that the MoU will empower the country by bridging the gap between the Federal Government and the traders.

“You came in and emphasised the need to bridge the gap between those in government and the people on the streets, and that is exactly what is happening today. This MoU is creating a cordial relationship between the traders and the government,” he said.

ACOVITEMN pledged to never disappoint the government and to ensure that Nigeria continues to prosper.
