The Minister of Livestock Development, Dr. Idi Maiha has urged the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) to spearhead the transformation of Nigeria’s livestock sector through innovative research and development.

Maiha made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the RMRDC director-general, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso to the ministry. He outlined critical areas where the council’s expertise could significantly impact the sector, including pasture and fodder development, local production of livestock feeds and the use of artificial insemination to enhance milk yields in cattle.

The minister also emphasised the importance of research into locally-produced medicines and vaccines, particularly for disease prevention in livestock and the need to develop strategies for protecting the skins of livestock species to boost their economic value.

Maiha further highlighted the potential of promoting exotic livestock breeds, such as the Sokoto Red goat, which is well-regarded for its high-quality leather, as a means of driving economic growth within the sector.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration to ensure the livestock industry becomes a robust contributor to Nigeria’s economy.
