Minister Reaffirms Commitment To Space Tech Devt

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji has reaffirmed his commitment to making Nigeria’s space science and technology program a success for the benefit of the entire citizenry and the greatness of the nation.

In a statement by the director of media and corporate communications at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Felix Ale the minister spoke during a sideline meeting with a delegation from Axiom Space at the ongoing 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, U.S.A.

Nnaji explained that space technologies impact almost all aspects of development, noting that they can benefit sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, weather forecasting, orbit planning and human resources.

According to him, the space economy has the potential to create wealth and drive national development.

Nnaji further emphasised that space technology and applications are fundamental tools for achieving sustainable development globally, especially in countries like Nigeria.

While thanking the visiting team from Axiom Space, the minister assured that Nigeria is open to collaboration and partnership in driving the effective development of its space programme.

Nnaji explained that the current administration views the space sector, along with innovation, science and technology, as strategic to its ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda. He added that no effort will be spared in giving it the prominence it deserves for the overall benefit of the Nigerian people.

In his remarks, special adviser to the president on technology and digital economy, Mr. Idris Saliu commended the minister for his passion and determination to consolidate Nigeria’s achievements in the critical space science and technology sector. He also thanked the visiting team for their presentation, saying their proposals would be thoroughly considered for possible future collaboration with NASRDA.

The director-general of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju expressed gratitude to the minister for taking the time to preside over the crucial meeting despite his busy schedule at the ongoing 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He emphasised that the success of NASRDA would undoubtedly help better define and drive innovation and development in Nigeria.

Adepoju, who praised the presentation by the Axiom Space representatives, assured the minister of his commitment to ensuring that NASRDA’s efforts under his leadership would complement the minister’s goals and objectives in making Nigeria’s entire innovation, science and technology ecosystem a success for the benefit of all Nigerians.

The leader of the Axiom Space delegation and senior director of international government business, had earlier told the minister that Axiom Space is offering Nigeria a unique opportunity to build on its ambitious national space programme as a spacefaring nation.

He explained that Nigeria is positioned to leverage this relationship to advance its burgeoning space industry, establishing itself as a leading space power in Africa.

This, he said, involves the effective implementation of its space policy, fostering international collaborations and attracting investment.

Meanwhile, Nnaji also hosted the United Nations special advisor on social and economic development for the Permanent Mission of Palau, Mr. Brock Pierce and his team at another sideline meeting in New York.

The minister explained that his mission to positively impact various parastatals under his ministry is not just a priority but a commitment that must be accomplished during the tenure of President Bola Tinubu.

Nnaji encouraged the visiting team to bring to his attention programmes or activities that could enhance productivity and excellence within any parastatal under the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
