The Nigeria military has fought off a spirited attempt by unknown gunmen to take over the Kaduna Airport.
A statement by the acting general manager, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, said the armed men attacked the ‘Runway 05’ axis of Kaduna airport at the weekend but were repelled by a combined team of military personnel and the crime investigation unit of FAAN, Aviation Security Department, launched a swift rescue operation, with one casualty reported in the incident. Normalcy has since been restored at the airport. The team also recovered two motorbikes abandoned by the fleeing elements.
The airport authority further assured that a ‘heavy’ reinforcement team from the Nigerian Defence Academy is on the ground to ensure safety and security of airport workers and users. Also, FAAN’s AVSEC Department has equally released operational vehicles to the team for patrol purposes.
“The authority uses this opportunity to sympathise with the family and friends of the victim of this unfortunate incident,” it said.
The statement said the authority shall continue to give further updates where necessary.
