The director-general of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Mansur Matazu, has been appointed to the Scientific and Academic Advisory Board of the agriculture, hydrology and meteorology research centre (AGRHYMET Regional Centre).
The RCC-WAS is a specialized institution of the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) based in Niamey, the Nigerien capital.
In a letter dated February 9, 2023 and signed by the director-general of the centre, Dr. Mahalmoudou Hamadoun, Matazu’s scientific and professional background was cited as the basis for his selection. The letter invited Matazu to accept membership on the Scientific and Academic Advisory Board as an expert in climate and hydroclimatic risks in the sub-committee 2 (CLIMAT).
In a congratulatory letter from the Ministry of Aviation, signed by the director of human resources management, Mrs. Nwokocha N.M, the ministry expressed hope that Matazu’s appointment by the international body would inspire him to make further contributions to the field of climate and hydroclimatic, benefiting humanity and expanding global knowledge.
The Scientific and Academic Advisory Board was established in 2001 and meets regularly to evaluate and provide advice on the training and operational research activities of the centre’s staff. Renowned scientists from West Africa, Europe and North America, who have worked in disciplines of interest to the centre, serve on the board for four years/sessions before they are replaced.
