The Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, Borno is all set to begin international operations from January 2025.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, following his conclusion of a strategic, one-day visit to the airport to review its upgrade to international operational status.
Accompanied by aviation leaders, including the managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku and representatives from NAMA, NCAA and NiMet, the minister met with Governor Babagana Zulum and other stakeholders to discuss progress and logistics.
The airport is slated to commence full international operations on January 1, 2025. This upgrade aims to enhance connectivity in Nigeria’s northeast, positioning Maiduguri as a key hub for international travel and cargo transport.
Zulum expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for prioritising aviation infrastructure and praised Keyamo for his leadership in advancing the sector. The governor pledged the state government’s full support for the project’s success.
Keyamo highlighted the airport’s symbolic importance for the region’s growth and resilience. Equipped with a world-class runway and modern facilities, the airport will also function as a cargo hub, supporting regional economic development.
The visit reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation landscape, ensuring national cohesion and promoting economic accessibility.
