The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji has stated that the partnership with the Grand Challenge Nigeria (GCNg) Project is part of a broader agenda to build a resilient, knowledge-driven economy that prioritises local solutions to local challenges.

According to Nnaji, “Working together, we are investing in Nigeria’s future, building a foundation for sustainable development and positioning our nation as a leader in innovation on the African continent.”

The minister made this statement during the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the ministry and Grand Challenge Nigeria (GCNg) today in Abuja.

He further explained that the signing of the MoU represents a pivotal step in advancing innovation and addressing some of the country’s most pressing needs, including economic growth, capital development and social welfare.

Nnaji noted that the ministry is preparing for the national launch of the Grand Challenge Nigeria (GCNg) project, scheduled for November 18, 2024.

The minister also described the launch as a landmark, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of harnessing science and technology to drive economic transformation, improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for Nigerians.

Commending the organisation for its vision and dedication, Nnaji added, “Together, we are embarking on a journey with the potential to create lasting impact and contribute to achieving President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda.”

In her remarks, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, said that signing the MoU with Grand Challenge Nigeria is timely, as the world grapples with nutrition issues stemming from climate change mitigation.

She added that the collaboration would address nutrition challenges, especially for vulnerable populations in the country.

Earlier, the delegation leader, Prof. Salisu Abubakar explained that the organisation is a localised initiative under the Global Grand Challenge family, designed to drive innovation and tackle critical health and development challenges in the country.

In a statement by the ministry’s deputy director of information and public relations, Atuora Obed, Abubakar further stated that the organisation aims to empower Nigerian researchers, scientists, and development practitioners to use innovative solutions to address the nation’s local challenges.
