The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, has taken decisive action to address the challenges arising from the relocation of international airlines to the new international terminal at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
This move became necessary after the recent fire outbreak at the old international terminal. The minister has established a task force to expedite the resolution of these issues within the shortest possible time.
The head of press and public affairs of the ministry, Mr. Oluseyi Odutayo announced this development over the weekend. The task force comprises several key members, including retired permanent secretary and former director of the department of air transport management, Engr. Hassan Musa as team leader; General manager, aerodrome, NCAA, Adebayo Oladipo; Special assistant to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Collins Mukoro; Special assistant to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mrs. Uyoyou Edhekpo and special assistant to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Henry Agbebire.
It is worth recalling that during the minister’s inspection of Lagos Airport on August 31, 2023, he set a relocation deadline of October 1, 2023. However, due to the recent fire outbreak that raised safety concerns and affected passenger movements, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had to accelerate the implementation of this directive.
The minister urged passengers and all stakeholders to exercise patience during this period of inconvenience. He emphasised that their understanding is crucial to ensuring a smooth transition for all parties involved.
The task force has three primary objectives:
- Resolve Passenger Concerns. The task force will diligently address all passenger concerns related to congestion, discomfort, and other issues arising from the terminal relocation. Every passenger’s voice will be heard and promptly addressed.
- Minimise Discomfort. Efforts will focus on minimising discomfort during this transitional period. Processes at both terminals will be streamlined and operations will be closely monitored 24/7. Proactive measures, including improved signage, dedicated support staff, and enhanced communication channels, will be implemented.
- Effective Public Communication. Transparency will be maintained throughout the relocation process. Regular updates on progress in addressing concerns will be provided. FAAN aims to enhance public relations strategies through various channels, including online platforms and customer service helplines, to keep travelers informed about developments.
In conclusion, the minister expressed his sincere regrets for the inconvenience caused and reassured all travelers of the government’s unwavering commitment to promptly resolving these concerns. Passenger comfort, safety and overall satisfaction remain top priorities during this transitional phase.
