In a landmark moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development,Mr.  Festus Keyamo SAN, officially inaugurated the maiden flight of Enugu Air, a newly established state-owned carrier by the Enugu State Government under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah.

The event, held at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, was marked by vibrant fanfare and high-level attendance, symbolising a major stride toward regional economic integration and the strengthening of Nigeria’s domestic air travel network.

Keyamo, accompanied by a powerful delegation that included the director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo; the managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku and the managing director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Farouk Umar, commended the state’s commitment to boosting aviation infrastructure and connectivity.

Describing the launch of Enugu Air as a “trailblazing initiative,” the minister praised Mbah’s foresight in leveraging strategic partnerships to bring the project to life.

“This is more than the unveiling of an airline,” Keyamo stated. “It is a bold expression of political will, a testament to what visionary leadership at the sub-national level can achieve when infrastructure investment is prioritised. Enugu Air reflects the kind of innovation we need to transform Nigeria into a robust, cohesive aviation hub.”

In his remarks, the governor expressed deep appreciation for the ministry’s backing, stating that Enugu Air is a key pillar in his administration’s broader economic development blueprint.

“This airline is not just a means of transportation; it represents our ambition to open Enugu to the world and draw global interest to the southeast,” Mbah said. “We are determined to harness tourism, attract investment, and enhance commerce. Enugu Air is an essential vehicle toward achieving those goals.”

The airline will be operated by Xejet, a rising airline in the Nigerian aviation space led by Emmanuel Iza. Known for its emphasis on premium service and safety, Xejet brings experience and innovation to the partnership. This operational arrangement is aimed at ensuring high standards from day one, offering passengers a dependable and comfortable travel experience.

Enugu Air’s operations will commence with key domestic routes, connecting the region to major Nigerian cities. Plans are already underway to scale operations to include regional West African destinations and international routes, once demand and regulatory approvals align.

The Federal Ministry of Aviation reiterated its support for such public-private initiatives, noting that collaboration between government and industry stakeholders is essential for sustainable aviation growth. The ministry pledged continued regulatory backing, safety oversight, and policy reforms to promote investment and ensure international best practices.

The ceremony concluded with a ceremonial water salute for the aircraft, followed by a tour of Enugu Air’s facilities. Stakeholders from both federal and state levels reaffirmed their commitment to positioning Nigeria’s aviation industry as a driver of economic growth, regional connectivity and national pride.
