L-R: The director-general, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dayo Mobereola and Research director; Africa Programme, Chatham House, Dr. Alex Vines OBE during the former’s visit to the Chatham House in London.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Chatham House, London, have agreed to raise the issue of maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this month.

This decision underscores the progress made by NIMASA in combating piracy and sea robbery in the region.

The decision emerged during a meeting between NIMASA’s director-general, Dr. Dayo Mobereola and director of the Africa Programme at Chatham House, Dr. Alex Vines. The meeting was also attended by Nigeria’s Alternate Permanent Representative at the International Maritime Organisation, Bwala William.

NIMASA and Chatham House have begun collaborating to convene a meeting of international stakeholders from both the public and private sectors in Nigeria. The goal is to develop a position paper on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

Following the meeting, Dr. Mobereola emphasised the importance of international partnerships in sustaining security in the region. “Our discussion with Chatham House was productive. Engaging the UN Security Council will ensure they are informed about the progress in Gulf of Guinea security. We need an independent analysis to transform these gains into economic benefits, such as reduced freight costs and addressing war risk insurance premiums for Nigerian-bound vessels. Chatham House’s involvement will be a catalyst in developing our Blue Economy,” Mobereola stated on his official X handle @MobereolaD.

Chatham House, a century-old institution, is renowned for providing independent analysis and fostering trusted dialogue to help people, societies and governments adapt to change.
