The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has launched iHatch Cohort 4, an initiative aimed at advancing Nigeria’s startup ecosystem.
Running from October 2024 to January 2025, the programme will support 185 startups and 37 innovation hubs across Nigeria, equipping them with the tools to succeed locally and globally.
This initiative, themed “Fostering Innovation, Building Ecosystems, Scaling Startups,” is pivotal to NITDA’s Digital Economy Policy and President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, driving economic diversification and digital transformation.
The iHatch programme, structured to enhance both startups and innovation hubs, focuses on entrepreneurship, job creation and technology-driven solutions. Startups will receive tailored mentorship and resources, while innovation hubs will undergo capacity-building initiatives, fostering sustainable incubation.
“iHatch Cohort 4 will empower innovators with knowledge and resources to turn ideas into impactful businesses,” said the national coordinator of the Office of Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), Victoria Fabunmi.
Key features include:
- Nationwide Reach: Entrepreneurs from all 36 states and the FCT will access resources equitably.
- Sectoral Focus: Emphasis on financial technology, agricultural technology, health technology, educational technology, logistics and civic technology.
- Demo Day: Startups will pitch ideas to investors, corporates, and stakeholders to secure funding.
- Hub Capacity Building: Innovation hubs will gain enhanced mentorship, facilities, and global exposure.
iHatch Cohort 4 aims for impactful outcomes, including:
- Incorporating 90 per cent of startups with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
- Developing Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) for 80 per cent of startups.
- Securing investments for 30 per cent of participants.
- Creating over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs.
- Ensuring 70 per cent operational sustainability of startups’ six-month post-programme.
These goals align with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) and the Nigerian Startup Act, fostering a robust environment for innovation-driven enterprises (IDEs).
The program underscores Nigeria’s readiness to lead in Africa’s digital economy. It empowers local entrepreneurs to address societal challenges through scalable solutions while contributing to global competitiveness.
NITDA’s director of corporate communications, Hadiza Umar highlighted the programme’s alignment with national goals, stating that it represents a critical step toward a knowledge-driven economy.
