A new tradition known as ‘Healthy Holiday Feasts’ has been launched in Abuja, to help families in Abuja celebrate the Yuletide and embrace good eating practices.
In an interview with Science Nigeria, Abuja residents expressed their commitment to incorporating nutrient-rich ingredients into festive recipes.
Mrs. Mary Adeyemi, a matriarch, highlighted the introduction of colourful fruits and vegetables alongside a traditional Christmas recipe, rice and sauce, creating a balanced and nourishing meal. Adeyemi emphasised the importance of actively sharing recipes within families, fostering a collective effort toward healthier choices.
Conscious of portion control and staying active during the holidays, Adeyemi conducted awareness campaigns and encouraged local fitness enthusiasts to organise family walks and outdoor activities. The ‘Healthy Holiday Feasts’ movement gained momentum, with neighbours joining in, making it a community-wide effort to enjoy a healthy lifestyle during the festive season.
Cooking classes and nutrition workshops became popular, contributing to a shared responsibility for well-being. Adeyemi expressed joy in seeing families savour wholesome meals prepared with love and care, appreciating the fusion of tradition and health. The new approach not only brought joy to the celebrations but also contributed to a healthier and more vibrant community in Nigeria.
Amidst the festivities, Mr. Isa Ahmed, a resident of Wasa area of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), spoke about the cultural significance of traditional dishes. He passionately advocated for the integration of healthier choices to ensure the well-being of future generations and urged the gathering to embrace a balanced celebration.
