The Federal and state governments have been urged to engage employers of labour across the country in the private and public sectors to take a proactive stance in fostering a culture of well-being in their employ, to enhance employee health and productivity.
The call was made by an Abuja-based health educator, Mr. Babatunde Friday. In an interview with Science Nigeria, Friday underscored the increasing trend among organisations to prioritise employee well-being through various strategies.
“These initiatives include incorporating short breaks for stretching or walking, utilising standing desks, promoting regular exercise, maintaining good posture and integrating activities like yoga. The goal is to counteract the adverse effects of sedentary lifestyles and prolonged hours spent at desks.
“Highlighting the broader impact of such initiatives, Friday emphasised that they not only enhance physical health but also contribute to improved mental well-being. This, in turn, leads to heightened productivity and increased job satisfaction among employees,” he said.
Addressing the health risks associated with sedentary work, Friday urged individuals to proactively adopt these strategies to enhance overall well-being and mitigate negative effects. He pointed out that many organisations have reported positive outcomes, including reduced absenteeism, improved focus and a more positive work environment.
Recognising the mutual benefits for both employees and organisations, Friday stressed that employers are increasingly acknowledging the significance of investing in workforce health. He emphasised the pivotal role of prevention in tackling chronic diseases and improving employee well-being. He suggested that the Nigerian government and employers can set an example by implementing preventive measures and fostering a culture of wellness.
Friday urged the government and employers to promote work-life balance by encouraging flexible working arrangements, offering paid time off, and fostering a supportive work environment. He emphasised the importance of recognising the need for rest to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being.
To create a workplace that supports physical and mental health, Friday recommended promoting ergonomics, encouraging regular breaks, and establishing designated spaces for physical activity. He also called for the implementation of policies addressing workplace stress and the establishment of open communication channels for employees to voice their concerns.
Finally, Friday stressed the importance of providing access to affordable healthcare services for employees, including health insurance coverage and regular check-ups. He suggested that organisations collaborate with healthcare providers to offer discounted rates and preventive care packages, encouraging employees to seek timely medical attention. This holistic approach, he believes, will contribute significantly to fostering a culture of well-being in the workplace.
