The founder and executive director of the International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH), Chief Moji Makanjuola, has said that in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, health advocacy has become more important than ever before.
Makanjuola, a respected veteran health journalist, at the weekend in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, made the call at the 7th Annual ANHEJ conference with the overarching theme, “Health Security: Nigeria’s Efforts to Achieve Universal Health Coverage,”
She said that with rising healthcare costs, complex insurance systems, and a growing emphasis on preventive care, individuals were seeking guidance and support to navigate the intricacies of the system and make informed decisions about their health.
She said that having witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by individuals in accessing quality healthcare, she stressed that Journalists should be determined to shed light on the pressing issues that affect Nigerians.
Makanjuola further said that through their extensive research and interviews with experts, they should aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare system, its flaws, and potential solutions.
“By sharing these insights, we are empowering Nigerians to become active participants in their healthcare journeys.
“One of the key areas we need to focus on is the importance of affordable healthcare. With skyrocketing medical costs and limited access to insurance coverage, many individuals are left grappling with financial burdens that can have a detrimental impact on their overall well-being,” she said.
She said that through in-depth investigations and personal stories, journalists aim to raise awareness about the need for accessible and affordable healthcare options for all.
“Mental health is another crucial aspect of journalism’s health advocacy work. Recognising the stigma surrounding mental health issues and the lack of resources available, journalists strive to destigmatize mental health and promote the importance of seeking help.
“By sharing stories of resilience and recovery, we aim to inspire others to prioritize their mental well-being and seek the support they need,” she said.
In addition to these pressing issues, she said journalists should also explore innovative approaches to wellness.
“From alternative therapies to holistic practices, seeks to highlight the diverse range of options available to individuals seeking to improve their health.
“By showcasing the success stories of those who have embraced unconventional methods, we are encouraging individuals to explore different paths to wellness and find what works best for them,” she added.
The veteran posited that through our engaging writing style and meticulous research, we are captivating our readers and instills a sense of urgency in addressing the challenges of the healthcare system.
According to her, with each of our articles, we map a course for health advocacy, guiding Nigerians towards a brighter and healthier future.
“By amplifying the voices of those fighting for change and providing practical tips and resources, we are empowering them to take action and become advocates for their health and the health of their communities,”.
As health advocacy takes centre stage in our society, she said that Journalists should remain committed to being a trusted source of information and inspiration.
By shining a light on the pressing issues, promoting accessible healthcare, and exploring innovative approaches to wellness, we continue to make a significant impact in the field of health journalism.
“ANHEJ needs to support this transformative journey as they map a course for health advocacy, empowering individuals to take charge of their health and contribute to a healthier future for all,” she added.
