The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy has pin-pointed growth and strengthening bilateral ties with the Nigerian government as the focus of his visit to Nigeria.
Lammy emphasised that “Growth is the core mission of this government and will underpin our relationships in Nigeria and beyond.” Lammy’s visit marks his first official trip to the African continent since assuming office.
During his visit, the Foreign Secretary will announce a five-month consultation process to ensure African voices guide and shape the UK’s approach to Africa. By accommodating the needs and ambitions of Africa’s 54 diverse nations, the consultation process aims to create partnerships grounded in mutual respect.
David Lammy underscored Africa’s economic potential, noting that “Africa has huge growth potential, with the continent on track to make up 25 per cent of the world’s population by 2050.” He stated, “Our new approach will deliver respectful partnerships that listen rather than tell, focusing on long-term growth over short-term solutions, fostering a freer, safer, and more prosperous continent. I want to understand what our African partners need so that the UK and Africa can grow together.”
The British envoy will champion collaboration on economic growth through the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership signed earlier this year. This partnership will serves as the main vehicle for promoting trade and market access between the UK and Nigeria, reinforcing the UK’s mission to support sustainable growth. High-level meetings with President Bola Tinubu, Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Lagos Stet governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will explore additional opportunities for trade and climate collaboration.
In alignment with President Tinubu’s macroeconomic reforms, Lammy will announce a comprehensive technical assistance package for Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance. This package will feature British expertise from institutions such as the Bank of England and HMRC to aid Nigeria in modernising and diversifying its economy.
“Catalysing reform across Nigeria will open up further opportunities within Nigeria’s economy for British businesses,” Lammy noted, adding that these reforms will create jobs and foster growth that benefits both countries. The Foreign Secretary’s visit underlines the UK’s commitment to a sustainable partnership with Nigeria, seeking shared growth, prosperity and opportunities that extend beyond borders.
