Green Africa, Nigeria’s Lagos-based value airline, has announced the acquisition of its first owned aircraft.

The new aircraft, an ATR 72-500 with manufacturer’s serial number 852 and registration mark 5N-GAB, is set to enter service soon after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.

According to the airline, Access Bank, one of the largest financial institutions in Nigeria and across Africa, provided a naira-denominated debt facility to partly finance the acquisition.

Founder of Green Africa, Babawande Afolabi described the purchase as a “major milestone” for the airline. He stated that the aircraft would play a crucial role as the company carefully moves into the next phase of its operations, aiming to make air travel more affordable, safe and reliable for a wider customer base.

Managing director of Access Bank, Roosevelt Ogbonna expressed his company’s enthusiasm in supporting Green Africa. He highlighted the bank’s commitment to empowering young businesses with the potential to transform their industries and drive positive change in their local markets and across the continent. He commended Green Africa’s progress and reaffirmed the bank’s support for the airline’s expansion.

Green Africa began operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic and entered revenue service in 2021. Since its launch, it has built a strong presence in Nigeria’s domestic aviation market, earning a reputation as one of the most affordable and punctual airlines in the industry. The acquisition of its first owned aircraft marks a significant step in its continued growth and commitment to improving air travel in the region.
