A professor of physical chemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Matthew Ayorinde has been named the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Gold Medal awarded by the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS).
In a statement signed by the NAS Science Prize Committee’s chair, Sonny Kuku and executive secretary, Oladoyin Odubanjo the Academy noted that the medal recognises significant scientific achievements of national relevance and global impact.
Instituted in 2016, the award alternates annually between life and physical sciences. The 2024 edition focuses on the Physical Sciences and includes a medal, a certificate, and a monetary prize.
NAS described Ayorinde as an accomplished researcher in material science, water treatment, corrosion technology, and environmental and applied chemistry. His work has significantly advanced the development of low-cost green materials and composites for wastewater remediation.
The academy highlighted his team’s groundbreaking research, including converting biomass, such as elephant grass, into biochar to remove nitrate contaminants from water. These efforts address pressing environmental challenges, ensuring safer water for communities.
“Professor Ayorinde’s contributions offer valuable insights for stakeholders and industries on transforming biomass into effective adsorptive materials for wastewater decontamination,” the statement said.
The award will be presented on January 22, 2025, during the 6th NAS Annual Scientific Conference in Abuja.
Founded in 1977, the Nigerian Academy of Science is the foremost independent scientific body in Nigeria. It is committed to advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) and shaping policies to address national challenges.
The academy’s objectives include promoting scientific knowledge and facilitating its application to solve pressing societal problems, aligning with its vision of fostering national development through science.
