The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has unveiled plans to address challenges faced by smallholder farmers and small-scale processors, aiming to boost their operations and contribute to national food security.

Speaking at the National Agricultural Show themed “Incentivizing Smallholder Farmers and Small-Scale Processors to Scale for the Attainment of Food Security in 2025,” NBRDA director-general, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha emphasised the critical role these farmers and processors play in Nigeria’s agricultural value chain. Represented by deputy director of the Agriculture Biotechnology Department, Mr. Bamidele Iyekolo, Mustapha highlighted NBRDA’s mandate to promote research and development, as well as deploy cutting-edge biotechnology for the nation’s socio-economic benefit.

He underscored that biotechnology provides practical solutions to the pressing issues confronting smallholder farmers, such as limited access to modern tools, financing, and market opportunities. Mustapha stated, “Smallholder farmers and processors are the heartbeat of Nigeria’s agricultural economy, yet they face significant hurdles that restrict their contribution to national food security.”

He added that using biotechnology can transform the agricultural landscape by enhancing crop yields, increasing disease resistance, and introducing climate-resilient farming technologies.

Looking ahead, Mustapha stressed the importance of equipping farmers and processors with the tools and knowledge needed to scale up and compete within the global food system. “NBRDA, in collaboration with government agencies, international partners and the private sector, is committed to making biotechnology accessible to these groups,” he said.

The agency’s efforts include providing genetically improved seeds, pest-resistant crops, and bio-based products to empower smallholder farmers and processors, ensuring a resilient and productive agricultural sector capable of meeting Nigeria’s food security objectives.
