The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert warning of heavy rainfall across several states from September 19, 2024, which may result in flash floods.

States at risk include Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River and Rivers. NiMet also cautioned that streams along water runoff paths may overflow, worsening the flooding.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to prepare for possible evacuation by identifying higher ground or designated shelters. NiMet strongly warns against driving or walking through flooded areas, as rapidly rising waters pose significant risks.

Additionally, people are urged to relocate valuables and livestock to safer areas, secure buildings, ensure access to clean water and stock up on essential supplies. Floodwaters can contaminate water sources, increasing the risk of water-borne diseases.

Residents should stay in touch with local authorities and support vulnerable members of the community, such as children and the elderly, during the flood event.
