The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy recently organised a workshop to co-create the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. This strategy, leveraging a human-centred design (HCD) approach, is envisioned to address Nigeria’s needs and those of the global community.

The move is in alignment with the priority areas of the present administration’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of accelerating diversification through industrialisation, digitisation, creative arts, manufacturing and innovation.

The four-day stakeholder strategy workshop, themed “Developing the High-Level Strategy and Implementation Plan for a National AI Strategy in Nigeria,” convened key industry players from the private and public sectors alongside global experts. Together, they deliberated on the transformative potential of AI in reshaping societies worldwide.

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani underscored the collective responsibility of participants in harnessing the power of AI for humanity’s betterment. He urged them to embrace a future where connectivity and innovation serve as catalysts for national and global development.

Highlighting the profound impact of digital technology on human interactions and societal norms, Dr. Tijani emphasized the need for inclusive participation in shaping AI’s trajectory. He stressed the importance of unity and embracing diverse perspectives to foster AI development that transcends national boundaries.

The ministry’s permanent secretary, Engr. Faruk Yabo emphasised AI’s potential to transform Nigeria’s economy across various sectors, from healthcare to agriculture, government operations, and education. He stressed the need for a practical and implementable strategy that considers Nigeria’s cultural values, traditions and specific needs.

The director-general of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mallam Kashifu Abdullahi highlighted the significance of leveraging AI as a catalyst for broader societal change. He emphasised the workshop’s unique approach of actively sharing ideas through cognitive processes to create an inclusive strategy reflecting national consensus.

Breakout sessions during the workshop focused on contextualising AI strategy, setting directional beacons for Nigeria’s AI, and developing a national vision and goal setting for AI implementation. Participants, grouped into syndicates, presented strategic initiatives and roadmap development for a robust AI Strategy document.

In his closing remarks, Tijani expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their contributions to the workshop’s success. He expressed confidence in the development of a robust National AI Strategy, benefiting not only Nigeria but also the global community.

The workshop marked a significant step towards harnessing AI’s transformative potential for Nigeria’s socioeconomic development. By fostering collaboration and innovation the Federal Government aims to position Nigeria as a leader in AI adoption and implementation, driving progress and prosperity for all citizens.
