The Nigerian government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MPH Rail Development (UK) Limited to enable them to design, construct, commission, operate and transfer the Port Harcourt – Enugu – Calabar – Abuja standard gauge rail line via a public-private partnership.
The MoU was executed by the Minister of Transportation, Senator Alkali, on behalf of the ministry.
This project is crucial for the Nigerian government’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, which prioritises the provision of efficient transportation. The memorandum was executed following the approval Outline Business Case and issuance of a compliance certificate by the Infrastructure, Concession and Regulatory Commission (ICRC).
The director of rail development, Engr. Zirra Fimbarr said, “This is a significant milestone in the development of the nation’s rail sector. We are excited to partner with MPH Rail Development (UK) Limited, and we believe that this partnership will yield the desired results.”
The project represents a landmark achievement for the Tinubu-led administration, which seeks to provide effective, efficient, affordable and sustainable rail transportation in Nigeria. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the economy, given that the railway is the most efficient means of transportation for goods and people.
During the MoU signing ceremony, the Minister of Transportation assured the investors of the ministry’s support to ensure the successful execution of the project. He also urged them to ensure diligent production and submission of all relevant documents that will facilitate the grant of FEC’s approval.
The managing director of MPH Rail Development (UK) Limited, Mr. Keith Johnson expressed his delight in partnering with the Nigerian government on the project. He said, “We are excited to be part of this ambitious project, which has the potential to revolutionise transportation in Nigeria. We are committed to ensuring that the project is executed to the highest standards.”
The project is expected to create thousands of jobs for Nigerians and boost economic activities in the areas where the railway will pass through. The Federal Ministry of Transportation has assured Nigerians of its commitment to delivering the project on time and to the highest quality standards.
