In a strategic move to align with international best practices, the Federal Ministries of Solid Minerals Development and Environment are intensifying collaboration to ensure that mining operations in Nigeria have a minimal adverse impact on the environment.
During a meeting with the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake expressed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to securing mining areas and implementing processes that adhere to global standards, ensuring negligible harm to the environment. Alake highlighted the removal of impediments to seamless operations as a key focus.
Addressing concerns around security in mining sites and the imperative to protect the environment from degradation due to mining operations, Lawal emphasised the significance of the recently launched solid minerals roadmap.
He asserted that the roadmap addresses environmental considerations associated with mining activities, underscoring the commitment to keeping the environmental impact within acceptable limits.
A statement by the special assistant to the minister on media, Segun Tomori, said the collaboration between the ministries aims to strike a balance between promoting mining activities and safeguarding the environment.
